One: The name Fishtown is derived from the area’s history as a center for fishing and shipbuilding. In the 19th century, Fishtown was the center of the American shad fishing industry. Fishtown was also home to many seafood processing plants.That may sound funny as Fishtown today has tons of great restaurants, but not really any really good Fish restaurants. The Fin tried to bring fish back to Fishtown, but they failed.

Two: Fishtown has a strong Irish-American history. The neighborhood’s Irish Catholic population began to decline in the late 20th century as many residents moved to the suburbs.

Three: Residents of Fishtown do not have to place the white rectangular wooden address signs that include a silver and green fish. These signs were created back in 2o00 by the Fishtown Neighbors Association to raise money for the Association. Four: You can know the streets of Philadelphia, but knowing the streets of Fishtown is a completely different animal. Fishtown is located below Front Street. This means that it’s below all the numbered streets of Philadelphia and thus you can’t really rely on cross streets.
