Let’s take a closer look at what makes Fishtown one of the best neighborhoods in all of Philadelphia.

History of Fishtown

Fishtown is a neighborhood with a long and storied history. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans until Europeans began settling there in the late 17th century. By the mid-1800s, it had become an important center for shad fishing on the Delaware River—hence its name “Fishtown”—and eventually became an industrial hub when companies such as Atlanic Mills (which made paint) and William Cramp & Sons Shipbuilding Company relocated there. Today, Fishtown has gone through an impressive transformation from an industrial center to a youthful community filled with art galleries, chic boutiques, and craft breweries.

Fishtown is overflowing with amazing things to see and do. Art enthusiasts will want to check out La Colombe Coffee Roasters or the Crane Arts Building where local artists show off their work daily.
